Dehydration and IV fluid replacement

Dehydration can be caused by losing too much fluid, not drinking enough water or fluids, or both.   The human body loses water by sweating and producing urine, so you must replace the lost fluid by drinking water and other beverages. Frequent urination, persistent diarrhea and vomiting, excessive sweating, and burns are some of the most common causes of dehydration in adults. Dehydration in sick children is often a combination of refusing to eat or drink and losing fluid from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever.    Drinking fluids is usually enough for mild dehydration; although in more severe cases IV fluid hydration is required.

Fluid Replacement via IV

Intravenous fluids replace the fluid lost through sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, and frequent urination. These fluids often contain potassium, glucose, and sodium, which are electrolytes your body needs to function normally. You may also need to replace lost fluids by drinking sports drinks or sipping clear broths or plain water. Because caffeinated beverages promote fluid excretion, you should avoid them if you have any symptoms of dehydration.

Types of IV Fluids

There are different types of intravenous fluids used to treat dehydration. Normal saline contains sodium and chlorine, so it replaces lost fluid and prevents or corrects some types of electrolyte imbalances. A solution of dextrose and water may also be used to treat dehydration. One of our experienced medical professionals will determine the right fluid to treat your condition and help you feel better as soon as possible.
